Should the Church Teach About Creation?

By Mike Riddle

In Scripture the theme of God as Creator is prominent in both the OT and NT. However, many churches choose to ignore or do little teaching about this Biblical doctrine. Many churches are confused about what to teach on creation and therefore leave it to each individual to decide what to believe. Some church leaders leave it to the scientific community to figure out what the Bible really teaches about origins. And some simply do not consider it important.

How important is creation? The first two chapters of Genesis establish the foundation for many of our Christian doctrines (marriage, sin, death, the Gospel). A careful study of creation teaches us about the God we worship and why we worship Him. In Revelation (Rev 4:11) we read about the hosts of heaven falling down to worship God because He is the Creator. If we want to understand who God is we need to start in Genesis. The fact that God is the Creator teaches us about His omnipotence. The fact that God created man teaches us about our relationship to Him. We (and not other creatures) were created in the image and likeness of God. The fact that God created all things teaches us that He is the transcendent, sovereign ruler.

The Evangelical Dictionary of Theology states it this way:
“Since God as Creator is the explanation for the existence of the world and for human existence, it is the activity of creation that establishes our deepest and most essential relation to God: as Creator and thus Lord. The doctrine of God as Creator, then, is perhaps the most basic conception of God that we know.”

Churches that do not provide a careful study of creation are withholding this full knowledge about the Creator and Savior. Why would any church want to keep this knowledge from their people? Regardless of what the world teaches about origins, we should never be ashamed to stand on Biblical authority and start with the Word of God as our first source of information.

Jesus said in Luke 9:26, “For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.”

Counter argument
We should focus on the Gospels and only teach about Jesus and Salvation.

Response
This type of reasoning is one of the reasons why many of our youth leave the church after high school (as many as 70%). They fail to provide a foundation for why we can stand on the authority of the Bible. Most Christian students still attend public schools and each year they are taught the Bible, especially creation, is a myth. Once students hear this and have not been taught the truth about the scientific and Biblical evidences for creation they begin to have doubts about the rest of Scriptures or see it as not relevant. This type of reasoning is also not Biblical. The Bible teaches “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible also teaches “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).
